Title: Ethyl sues, Canadians lose

Description: It was a shocking case of corporate profits over human health. In 1997, the Canadian government banned imports of a toxic chemical called MMT. Ethyl Corporation, the U.S. chemical giant which makes MMT, used NAFTA to sue the Canadian government for $250 million in lost profits. The government backed down: they removed the ban, and paid Ethyl $19 million. Other companies have since sued Canada under the NAFTA rules.
